Client Success Story:

"Before we started working with Vicki Suiter, I was the primary problem solver. Vicki helped me understand that by shifting the responsibility to my staff, where it belonged, the clarity they gained would empower them and take some of the load off of me.

Now, when there is a problem, I ask what they think we should do. They always have at least two or three solutions!

Help Employees Step Up to the Plate and Transform Your Business!
A culture of accountability sets up a game worth playing, makes work more fun and puts more time in your day!
Over the past twenty years, one of the most common complaints I've heard from business owners is: "People don't do what they say they're going to do!" Or, "my staff is completely dependent on me to get their jobs done." The problem? Lack of clear accountability!
The role your business environment or culture plays in getting things done is as important as the methods you use. When you have a culture of accountability, your business environment places value on accountability, and employees step up to the plate and take ownership.
Here are the keys for building a culture of accountability in your company:
  • Key 1- Align staff on a common purpose and motivate them to take actions consistent with that purpose. Do this by having clearly defined job responsibilities (descriptions) for each position in the company.
  • Key 2 - Manage to objectives by being clear, direct and assertive, rather than confrontational or aggressive. Once you have responsibilities defined, manage to those.  You don't have to be the bad guy any more - let the job description set the standard.
  • Key 3 - Honest and frank conversations with people build trust and good long-term relationships. Be willing to talk about what is working and not working!
  • Key 4 - Implement the tactics for building a culture of accountability that successful companies have used to transform their businesses! This includes holding people accountable to their agreements, confronting the facts, and managing by results.
  • Key 5 - The GOLDEN KEY - ALWAYS acknowledge and celebrate successes!!!  It keeps the fun in the game.
Practicing each of the keys above will build a culture where people take responsibility for their actions and produce more consistent results.
Building a culture of accountability is the key for creating an organization that has sustainable success!  Changing a culture requires consistent, persistent and committed action.  Be willing to hang in there until it simply becomes "the way you do business!"

To get more details on each of these "keys," read my article titled "Transforming Company Culture."

One of the best books I've read that speaks to the topic of building a culture of accountability is "Good to Great" by Jim Collins. A must-read for any business owner or manager who is interested in building sustainable success!

Last Month's Winner for "Ways to Outlast & Outshine the Competition!"

Last month, I asked for your ideas on ways you can "outshine the competition." While I got many great responses, one that stood out came from Dortha Hise in Sacramento. Dortha shared the following as her strategy for clearly outshining the competition:

"I always go the extra mile in staying connected with customers. I send birthday cards, thank you notes, and when appropriate, sympathy or get well cards. Sometimes, I'll give away extra products or a coupon good for free services. I stay connected on Facebook® and LinkedIn® and stay involved in community events where I know my customers will be. All of these things keep me connected, let my prospects and customers know they are important to me AND keep me front-of-mind. Even if customers don't need to buy today, when they are ready to buy, they will remember me!"

Thank you, Dortha, for your great ideas and congratulations for coming up with these great ways to "outshine the competition"!!!!

Dortha has won a free "Business Health Assessment" as a thank you for her contribution.
